Cloud solutions 101
Different types of services are available in the cloud. They break down into three main categories:
- PaaS (Platform as a Service): provides businesses with access to a quickly accessible operating environment, giving them full control of applications, which they can personally develop, run and manage. For example, Microsoft offers AzureSQL or Power BI and Amazon offers Redshift.
- SaaS (Software as a Service): allows for the replacement of applications traditionally hosted onsite. Microsoft’s Office 365 is a good example.
- IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): a technological infrastructure (server, storage, backup, network) hosted by a service provider and made available to customers through a paid subscription. Some available options include Microsoft Azure Web Services, AWS Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Engine.
